John William Hughes (79), passed away on March 10, 2017. He was the husband of Phyllis Hughes.
Born in Havre de Grace, Maryland, he was the son of Thomas and Elsie Haines Hughes. He graduated from Havre de Grace High School and proudly served in the US Army in Hawaii for 3-1/2 years. He was employed at Boeing Air/NASA where he helped build the rocket Saturn V engines for Apollo 11 which put the first man on the moon.

Born in Havre de Grace, Maryland, he was the son of Thomas and Elsie Haines Hughes. He graduated from Havre de Grace High School and proudly served in the US Army in Hawaii for 3-1/2 years. He was employed at Boeing Air/NASA where he helped build the rocket Saturn V engines for Apollo 11 which put the first man on the moon.
John moved to Charlotte in 1969. He loved cruising the Caribbean, wood working, building things with his hands, loved traveling the NASCAR circuit and camping at the beach.
He will be remembered as a storyteller and a practical joker.
John was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Thomas Hughes and James Hughes. He is survived by his loving wife Phyllis Hughes; son Steve (Terri) Hughes, and John Christie Hughes Jr.; daughter Sherri (Ray) Fink; sister Emily Moser; grandsons Adam (Erica) Hughes, Joel Hughes, Nathan Hughes, Noah Hughes; great grandson Eli Hughes; great granddaughter Adelyn Hughes.
